Affiliate Marketing is a method of promoting your site through the efforts of third-party marketers, and for this service you reward them financially.
The goals that you set in affiliate marketing can be quite fluid. It may be that you give the Affiliate Marketers a small fee for each visitor that they send you. Perhaps you would want the affiliate marketers to send you leads, in the shape of filled-in forms, say. It may be that you decide that a sale is a goal. In that case, for each sale you make that is derived from the buyer being sent to you through the Affiliate’s efforts, you would pay them a proportionally larger fee.
Easily the most common form of Affiliate Marketing is the revenue share, or cost per sale. This is because if you use this model, the Affiliate has a direct interest in you making a sale. If you are just paying the Affiliate to deliver visitors to your site, he has very little interest in what they do once they get there. He doesn’t have to bother with notions of targeted traffic or whether the visitors he sends have any interest at all in what you are offering. As you will have already decided, this is definitely not in your best interest as you can end up paying for traffic that you really don’t want.
